Hemispheric average Cl atom concentration from 13 C / 12 C ratios in atmospheric methane

چکیده
Methane is a significant atmospheric trace gas in the context of greenhouse warming and climate change. The dominant sink of atmospheric methane is the hydroxyl radical (OH). Recently, a mechanism for production of chlorine radicals (Cl) in the marine boundary layer (MBL) via bromine autocatalysis has been proposed. The importance of this mechanism in producing a methane sink is not clear at present because of the difficulty of in-situ direct measurement of Cl. However, the large kinetic isotope effect of Cl compared with OH produces a large fractionation of 13 C compared with 12 C in atmospheric methane. This property can be used to estimate the likely minimum size of the methane sink attributable to MBL Cl. By taking account of the mixing of MBL air into the free troposphere, we estimate that the global methane sink due to reaction with Cl atoms in the MBL could be as large as 19 Tg yr −1 , or about 3.3% of the total CH 4 sink. However, its impact on the methane stable carbon isotope budget is large and warrants further attention .

متن کاملEstimates of Cl atom concentrations and hydrocarbon kinetic reactivity in surface air at Appledore Island, Maine (USA), during International Consortium for Atmospheric Research on Transport and Transformation/Chemistry of Halogens at the Isles of Shoals
[1] Average hydroxyl radical (OH) to chlorine atom (Cl ) ratios ranging from 45 to 119 were determined from variability-lifetime relationships for selected nonmethane hydrocarbons (NMHC) in surface air from six different transport sectors arriving at Appledore Island, Maine, during July 2004. Multiplying these ratios by an assumed average OH concentration of 2.5 10 cm 3 yielded estimates of Cl ...

In situ continuous hourly measurements of C 2-C 8 non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHC S) have been performed from March to October 2006 at two coastal locations on the island of Crete, in the Eastern Mediterranean. Well defined diurnal variations were observed for several short lived NMHC S (including ethene, propene, n-butane, 5 n-pentane, n-hexane, 2-methyl-pentane). The daytime concentration of h...
